In this tutorial we learn how to install zfs-auto-snapshot on Ubuntu.
What is zfs-auto-snapshot
zfs-auto-snapshot is:
Automatically create, rotate, and destroy periodic ZFS snapshots. This is the utility that creates the @zfs-auto-snap_frequent, @zfs-auto-snap_hourly, @zfs-auto-snap_daily, @zfs-auto-snap_weekly, and @zfs-auto-snap_monthly snapshots if it is installed.
This program is a posixly correct bourne shell script. It depends only on the zfs utilities and cron, and can run in the dash shell.
There are three methods to install zfs-auto-snapshot on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install zfs-auto-snapshot Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install zfs-auto-snapshot using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install zfs-auto-snapshot
Install zfs-auto-snapshot Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install zfs-auto-snapshot using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install zfs-auto-snapshot
Install zfs-auto-snapshot Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

How To Uninstall zfs-auto-snapshot on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the zfs-auto-snapshot package we can use the following command:
