Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install yp-tools on Ubuntu.

What is yp-tools

yp-tools is:

This package provides a number of tools for working with NIS installations including ypset, ypwhich, ypcat, ypmatch, yppoll, ypchfn, ypchsh and yppasswd.

NIS, originally known as Yellow Pages (YP), is mostly used to let several machines in a network share the same account information, such as the password file. It is an old, but simple system to share information, which should be used only in relatively trusted networks, due to its intrinsic limitations for security.

There are three methods to install yp-tools on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install yp-tools Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install yp-tools using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install yp-tools

Install yp-tools Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install yp-tools using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install yp-tools

Install yp-tools Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install yp-tools using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install yp-tools

How To Uninstall yp-tools on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the yp-tools package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove yp-tools

Uninstall yp-tools And Its Dependencies

To uninstall yp-tools and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove yp-tools

Remove yp-tools Configurations and Data

To remove yp-tools configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge yp-tools

Remove yp-tools configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove yp-tools configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge yp-tools
