In this tutorial we learn how to install yowsup-cli on Ubuntu.
What is yowsup-cli
yowsup-cli is:
WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages, via Internet, without having to pay for SMS, using a mobile phone.
In addition to basic messaging, WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.
yowsup-cli is a command line program, based in python-yowsup library, that allows you to login and use the WhatsApp service, providing all capabilities of an official WhatsApp client, as encryption of messages. This program can be used for multiple purposes as e.g. to receive messages from network servers or appliances, notifying about issues, via direct command or by special agents (Zabbix, Nagios, iwatch, portsentry, etc.).
This package is a good example of the python-yowsup library implementation.
There are three methods to install yowsup-cli on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install yowsup-cli Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install yowsup-cli using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install yowsup-cli
Install yowsup-cli Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install yowsup-cli using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install yowsup-cli
Install yowsup-cli Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install yowsup-cli using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install yowsup-cli
How To Uninstall yowsup-cli on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the yowsup-cli package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove yowsup-cli
Uninstall yowsup-cli And Its Dependencies
To uninstall yowsup-cli and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove yowsup-cli
Remove yowsup-cli Configurations and Data
To remove yowsup-cli configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge yowsup-cli
