Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install xzdec on Ubuntu.
What is xzdec
xzdec is:
XZ is the successor to the Lempel-Ziv/Markov-chain Algorithm compression format, which provides memory-hungry but powerful compression (often better than bzip2) and fast, easy decompression.
This package provides the xzdec and lzmadec utilities, which write the decompressed version of a compressed file to standard output. The binaries are very small, so they can be easily stored on small media with some compressed files, and they are linked statically against liblzma so they can be used on machines without a compatible version of liblzma installed. However, they have:
- no compression support;
- no support for writing to a file other than standard output;
- no translated messages;
- been optimized for size rather than speed.
For a full-featured xzcat command without these limitations, use the xz-utils package instead.
There are three methods to install xzdec on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xzdec Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xzdec using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xzdec

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install xzdec using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xzdec

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xzdec using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xzdec
How To Uninstall xzdec on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the xzdec package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xzdec

To uninstall xzdec and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xzdec
Remove xzdec Configurations and Data
To remove xzdec configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xzdec
