In this tutorial we learn how to install xscreensaver-data
on Ubuntu.
What is xscreensaver-data
xscreensaver-data is:
XScreenSaver is a modular screen saver and locker for X11, containing more than 200 screen savers.
This package contains a small selection of graphical screen saver modules (listed below) from the xscreensaver collection. This package can be used by xscreensaver and also some other screensaver engines.
This is the selected set of non-GL screensavers shipped by default: abstractile, binaryring, cwaves, deco, distort, fiberlamp, fuzzyflakes, galaxy, hexadrop, m6502, metaballs, penrose, ripples, scooter, shadebobs, slidescreen, swirl, tessellimage, xlyap.
More display modes can be found in xscreensaver-data-extra, xscreensaver-gl and xscreensaver-gl-extra packages.
There are three methods to install xscreensaver-data
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xscreensaver-data Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xscreensaver-data
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xscreensaver-data
Install xscreensaver-data Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install xscreensaver-data
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xscreensaver-data
Install xscreensaver-data Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xscreensaver-data
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xscreensaver-data
How To Uninstall xscreensaver-data on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the xscreensaver-data
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xscreensaver-data
Uninstall xscreensaver-data And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xscreensaver-data
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xscreensaver-data
Remove xscreensaver-data Configurations and Data
To remove xscreensaver-data
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xscreensaver-data
Remove xscreensaver-data configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove xscreensaver-data
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xscreensaver-data
