This package provides original Debian (with Debian patches already applied, and autotools files updated) sources for the X.Org (‘Xorg’) X server shipped in a tarball. This enables other projects re-using X server codebase (e.g. VNC servers) to (re-)use officially Debian-supported version of the X xserver for their builds.
Unless you are building a software product using X server sources, you probably want xserver-xorg and/or xserver-xorg-core instead.
There are three methods to install xorg-server-source
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xorg-server-source Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xorg-server-source
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xorg-server-source
Install xorg-server-source Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install xorg-server-source
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xorg-server-source

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xorg-server-source
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xorg-server-source
How To Uninstall xorg-server-source on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the xorg-server-source
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xorg-server-source
Uninstall xorg-server-source And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xorg-server-source
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xorg-server-source
Remove xorg-server-source Configurations and Data
To remove xorg-server-source
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xorg-server-source
Remove xorg-server-source configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove xorg-server-source
