Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install xmlto
on Ubuntu.
What is xmlto
xmlto is:
xmlto is a front-end to an XSL toolchain. It chooses an appropriate stylesheet for the conversion you want and applies it using an external XSLT processor (currently, only xsltproc is supported). It also performs any necessary post-processing.
It supports converting from DocBook XML to DVI, XSL-FO, HTML and XHTML (one or multiple pages), epub, manual page, PDF, PostScript and plain text. It also supports converting from XSL-FO to DVI, PDF and PostScript.
DVI output requires dblatex or PassiveTeX. Other formats can be produced with any of the supported toolchains - dblatex, PassiveTeX or docbook-xsl/fop (but may require some extensions).
There are three methods to install xmlto
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xmlto Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xmlto
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xmlto

After updating apt database, We can install xmlto
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install xmlto
Install xmlto Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xmlto
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xmlto
How To Uninstall xmlto on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the xmlto
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xmlto
Uninstall xmlto And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xmlto
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xmlto
Remove xmlto Configurations and Data
To remove xmlto
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xmlto
Remove xmlto configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove xmlto
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xmlto
