In this tutorial we learn how to install xapian-omega
on Ubuntu.
What is xapian-omega
xapian-omega is:
This package contains:
- the “omega” CGI application which provides a customisable web interface for searching Xapian databases.
- the “omindex” tool for indexing a directory tree of documents into a Xapian database in a form suitable for searching with omega.
- the “scriptindex” indexer, which takes a simple text input format representing documents as a set of fields, together with an “index script” file specifying actions to be performed on each field, and indexes the documents into a Xapian database.
- some example scripts for converting data from different sources into a form suitable for processing with “scriptindex”.
There are three methods to install xapian-omega
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install xapian-omega Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install xapian-omega
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install xapian-omega

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install xapian-omega
using apt

sudo apt -y install xapian-omega
Install xapian-omega Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install xapian-omega
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install xapian-omega
How To Uninstall xapian-omega on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the xapian-omega
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove xapian-omega
Uninstall xapian-omega And Its Dependencies
To uninstall xapian-omega
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove xapian-omega
Remove xapian-omega Configurations and Data
To remove xapian-omega
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge xapian-omega
