Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install wordnet-base
on Ubuntu.
What is wordnet-base
wordnet-base is:
WordNet(C) is an on-line lexical reference system whose design is inspired by current psycholinguistic theories of human lexical memory. English nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are organized into synonym sets, each representing one underlying lexical concept. Different relations link the synonym sets.
WordNet was developed by the Cognitive Science Laboratory at Princeton University under the direction of Professor George A. Miller (Principal Investigator).

There are three methods to install wordnet-base
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install wordnet-base Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install wordnet-base
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install wordnet-base
Install wordnet-base Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install wordnet-base
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install wordnet-base
Install wordnet-base Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install wordnet-base
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install wordnet-base
How To Uninstall wordnet-base on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the wordnet-base
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove wordnet-base
Uninstall wordnet-base And Its Dependencies
To uninstall wordnet-base
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove wordnet-base
Remove wordnet-base Configurations and Data
To remove wordnet-base
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge wordnet-base
Remove wordnet-base configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove wordnet-base
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge wordnet-base
