In this tutorial we learn how to install winregfs on Ubuntu.
What is winregfs
winregfs is:
Winregfs is a FUSE-based filesystem driver that enables accessing of Windows registry hive files as ordinary filesystems. Registry hive file editing can be performed with ordinary shell scripts and command-line tools once mounted.
fsck.winregfs scans a Windows registry hive file for problems that indicate the hive has been damaged by hardware or software issues, reading recursively the key and value data structures in the registry hive.
This package provides mount.winregfs and fsck.winregfs commands. Winregfs is useful for pentesters, ethical hackers and forensics experts.
There are three methods to install winregfs on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install winregfs Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install winregfs using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install winregfs
Install winregfs Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install winregfs using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install winregfs
Install winregfs Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install winregfs using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install winregfs
How To Uninstall winregfs on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the winregfs package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove winregfs
Uninstall winregfs And Its Dependencies
To uninstall winregfs and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove winregfs
Remove winregfs Configurations and Data
To remove winregfs configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge winregfs
