In this tutorial we learn how to install wcslib-tools
on Ubuntu.
What is wcslib-tools
wcslib-tools is:
WCSLIB is a C library, supplied with a full set of Fortran wrappers, that implements the “World Coordinate System” (WCS) standard in FITS (Flexible Image Transport System).
This package contains the utility programs fitshdr, wcsware, HPXcvt, and wcsgrid that are included in wcslib.
There are three methods to install wcslib-tools
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install wcslib-tools Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install wcslib-tools
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install wcslib-tools

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install wcslib-tools
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install wcslib-tools

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.

using aptitude

How To Uninstall wcslib-tools on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the wcslib-tools
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove wcslib-tools

To uninstall wcslib-tools
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove wcslib-tools
Remove wcslib-tools Configurations and Data
To remove wcslib-tools
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge wcslib-tools
