Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install vpx-tools
on Ubuntu.
What is vpx-tools
vpx-tools is:
VP8 and VP9 are open video codecs, originally developed by On2 and released as open source by Google Inc. They are the successor of the VP3 codec, on which the Theora codec was based.
This package contains the commandline tools vpxdec and vpxenc.
There are three methods to install vpx-tools
on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install vpx-tools Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install vpx-tools
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install vpx-tools

After updating apt database, We can install vpx-tools

by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install vpx-tools
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install vpx-tools
How To Uninstall vpx-tools on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the vpx-tools
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove vpx-tools
Uninstall vpx-tools And Its Dependencies
To uninstall vpx-tools
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove vpx-tools
Remove vpx-tools Configurations and Data
To remove vpx-tools
configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge vpx-tools
