What is volume-key
volume-key is:
This package provides a command-line tool for manipulating storage volume encryption keys and storing them separately from volumes.
The main goal of the software is to allow restoring access to an encrypted hard drive if the primary user forgets the passphrase. The encryption key back up can also be useful for extracting data after a hardware or software failure that corrupts the header of the encrypted volume, or to access the company data after an employee leaves abruptly.
There are three methods to install volume-key on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install volume-key Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install volume-key using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install volume-key

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install volume-key using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install volume-key
Install volume-key Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install volume-key using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install volume-key
How To Uninstall volume-key on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the volume-key package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove volume-key

To uninstall volume-key and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove volume-key
Remove volume-key Configurations and Data
To remove volume-key configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge volume-key
