In this tutorial we learn how to install virt-v2v on Ubuntu.
What is virt-v2v
virt-v2v is:
Virt-v2v is a program that converts a single guest from a foreign hypervisor to run on KVM. It can read Linux and Windows guests running on VMware, Xen, Hyper-V and some other hypervisors, and convert them to KVM managed by libvirt, OpenStack, oVirt, Red Hat Virtualisation (RHV) or several other targets. It can modify the guest to make it bootable on KVM and install virtio drivers so it will run quickly.
There are three methods to install virt-v2v on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install virt-v2v Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install virt-v2v using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install virt-v2v
Install virt-v2v Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install virt-v2v using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install virt-v2v
Install virt-v2v Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install virt-v2v using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install virt-v2v
How To Uninstall virt-v2v on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the virt-v2v package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove virt-v2v
Uninstall virt-v2v And Its Dependencies
To uninstall virt-v2v and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove virt-v2v
Remove virt-v2v Configurations and Data
To remove virt-v2v configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge virt-v2v
Remove virt-v2v configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
