How To Install vim-gitgutter on Ubuntu

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install vim-gitgutter on Ubuntu.

What is vim-gitgutter

vim-gitgutter is:

Vim plugin which shows a git diff in the ‘gutter’ (sign column). It shows which lines have been added, modified, or removed. You can also preview, stage, and undo individual hunks; and stage partial hunks. The plugin also provides a hunk text object.

The signs are always up to date and the plugin never saves your buffer.

There are three methods to install vim-gitgutter on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install vim-gitgutter Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install vim-gitgutter using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install vim-gitgutter

Install vim-gitgutter Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install vim-gitgutter using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install vim-gitgutter

Install vim-gitgutter Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install vim-gitgutter using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install vim-gitgutter

How To Uninstall vim-gitgutter on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the vim-gitgutter package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove vim-gitgutter

Uninstall vim-gitgutter And Its Dependencies

To uninstall vim-gitgutter and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove vim-gitgutter

Remove vim-gitgutter Configurations and Data

To remove vim-gitgutter configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge vim-gitgutter

Remove vim-gitgutter configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove vim-gitgutter configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge vim-gitgutter
