Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install videogen on Ubuntu.
What is videogen
videogen is:
Videogen is a small but nice utility to create modelines you can insert into your xorg.conf and fb.modes files.
Modeline is created by telling the program the resolution you want and your video hardware parameters (maximum video adapter bandwidth, maximum HCF and VCF of the monitor etc).
Note that for most modern installations, Xorg will handle its own modesetting automatically, and you don’t need videogen to generate any Modelines.
The tool ‘some_modes’ may help you to create some common modes fast.
There are three methods to install videogen on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install videogen Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install videogen using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install videogen
Install videogen Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install videogen using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install videogen
Install videogen Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install videogen using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install videogen
How To Uninstall videogen on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the videogen package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove videogen
Uninstall videogen And Its Dependencies
To uninstall videogen and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove videogen
Remove videogen Configurations and Data
To remove videogen configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge videogen
Remove videogen configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge videogen
