In this tutorial we learn how to install valac on Ubuntu.
What is valac
valac is:
Vala is a new programming language that aims to bring modern programming language features to GNOME developers without imposing any additional runtime requirements and without using a different ABI compared to applications and libraries written in C.
valac, the Vala compiler, is a self-hosting compiler that translates Vala source code into C source and header files. It uses the GObject type system to create classes and interfaces declared in the Vala source code. This package also contains the vala-gen-introspect and vapigen binaries that will automatically generate Vala bindings.
There are three methods to install valac on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install valac Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install valac using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install valac
Install valac Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install valac using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install valac
Install valac Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install valac using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install valac
How To Uninstall valac on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the valac package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove valac
Uninstall valac And Its Dependencies
To uninstall valac and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove valac
Remove valac Configurations and Data
To remove valac configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge valac
