Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install topgit on Ubuntu.

What is topgit

topgit is:

TopGit manages a patch queue using Git topic branches, one patch per branch. It allows for patch dependencies and can thus manage non-linear patch series.

TopGit is a minimal layer on top of Git, which does not limit use of Git’s functionality (such as the index). It rigorously keeps history until a patch is accepted upstream. It is also fully usable across distributed repositories.

There are three methods to install topgit on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install topgit Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install topgit using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install topgit

Install topgit Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install topgit using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install topgit

Install topgit Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install topgit using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install topgit

How To Uninstall topgit on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the topgit package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove topgit

Uninstall topgit And Its Dependencies

To uninstall topgit and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove topgit

Remove topgit Configurations and Data

To remove topgit configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge topgit
