In this tutorial we learn how to install tomb on Ubuntu.
What is tomb
tomb is:
Tomb is a free and easy to operate desktop application for fairly strong encryption of personal files. A tomb is like a locked folder that can be transported and hidden in filesystems; its keys are password protected and can be kept separate, for instance keeping the tomb file in your computer’s harddisk and the key file on a USB stick.
Tomb relies on dm-crypt (and cryptsetup) as an encryption backend using the aes-xts-plain64 cypher.
There are three methods to install tomb on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install tomb Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install tomb using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install tomb
Install tomb Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install tomb using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install tomb
Install tomb Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install tomb using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install tomb
How To Uninstall tomb on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the tomb package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove tomb
Uninstall tomb And Its Dependencies
To uninstall tomb and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove tomb
Remove tomb Configurations and Data
To remove tomb configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge tomb
