Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install tipa on Ubuntu.

What is tipa

tipa is:

TIPA is a system for processing IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols in LaTeX written by Fukui Rei. TIPA stands for either TeX IPA or Tokyo IPA and derived from the tsipa package, made in 1992 by Kobayashi Hajime, Fukui Rei and Shirakawa Shun.

Among many features of TIPA, the following are the new features as compared with tsipa or any other existing systems for processing IPA symbols:

Type 1 fonts for TIPA are also included in this package (to make them available in X11 applications other than LaTeX, please install the xfonts-tipa package).

There are three methods to install tipa on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install tipa Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install tipa using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install tipa

Install tipa Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install tipa using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install tipa

Install tipa Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install tipa using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install tipa

How To Uninstall tipa on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the tipa package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove tipa

Uninstall tipa And Its Dependencies

To uninstall tipa and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove tipa

Remove tipa Configurations and Data

To remove tipa configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge tipa

Remove tipa configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove tipa configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge tipa
