In this tutorial we learn how to install timbl on Ubuntu.

What is timbl

timbl is:

Memory-Based Learning (MBL) is a machine-learning method applicable to a wide range of tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP).

The Tilburg Memory Based Learner, TiMBL, is a tool for NLP research, and for many other domains where classification tasks are learned from examples. It is an efficient implementation of k-nearest neighbor classifier.

TiMBL’s features are:

TiMBL is a product of the Centre of Language and Speech Technology (Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands), the ILK Research Group (Tilburg University, The Netherlands) and the CLiPS Research Centre (University of Antwerp, Belgium).

There are three methods to install timbl on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install timbl Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install timbl using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install timbl

Install timbl Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install timbl using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install timbl

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install timbl using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install timbl

How To Uninstall timbl on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the timbl package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove timbl

Uninstall timbl And Its Dependencies

To uninstall timbl and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove timbl

Remove timbl Configurations and Data

To remove timbl configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge timbl

Remove timbl configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove timbl configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge timbl
