Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install tig on Ubuntu.
What is tig
tig is:
This package contains a text-mode interface for the version control system Git. It may be used to browse the history and contents of a repository.
The following main features are supported:
- View revision logs, commit messages, diffstats, diffs, archive trees and file contents.
- Visualize revision graphs.
- Stage / unstage changes and add untracked files.
- Merge files.
- Cherry-pick commits.
tig may also be used as a pager. It reads input from stdin and colorizes it.
There are three methods to install tig on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install tig Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install tig using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install tig

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install tig using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install tig
Install tig Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install tig using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install tig
How To Uninstall tig on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the tig package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove tig

To uninstall tig and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove tig

To remove tig configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
