How To Install tftpd on Ubuntu

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install tftpd on Ubuntu.

What is tftpd

tftpd is:

Tftpd is a server which supports the Internet Trivial File Transfer Protocol (RFC 783). The TFTP server operates at the port indicated in the `tftp' service description; see services(5). The server is normally started by inetd(8).

Warning: Does not support ’tsize’, which is required by some tftp clients, especially PXE, and various other network boot clients. For those, use atftpd or tftpd-hpa.

There are three methods to install tftpd on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install tftpd Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install tftpd using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install tftpd

Install tftpd Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install tftpd using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install tftpd

Install tftpd Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install tftpd using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install tftpd

How To Uninstall tftpd on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the tftpd package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove tftpd

Uninstall tftpd And Its Dependencies

To uninstall tftpd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove tftpd

Remove tftpd Configurations and Data

To remove tftpd configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge tftpd

Remove tftpd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove tftpd configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge tftpd
