How To Install tcpd on Ubuntu

Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install tcpd on Ubuntu.
What is tcpd
tcpd is:
Wietse Venema’s network logger, also known as TCPD or LOG_TCP.
These programs log the client host name of incoming telnet, ftp, rsh, rlogin, finger etc. requests.
Security options are:
- access control per host, domain and/or service;
- detection of host name spoofing or host address spoofing;
- booby traps to implement an early-warning system.
There are three methods to install tcpd on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install tcpd Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install tcpd using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install tcpd
Install tcpd Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install tcpd using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install tcpd
Install tcpd Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install tcpd using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install tcpd
How To Uninstall tcpd on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the tcpd package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove tcpd
Uninstall tcpd And Its Dependencies
To uninstall tcpd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove tcpd
Remove tcpd Configurations and Data
To remove tcpd configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge tcpd
Remove tcpd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove tcpd configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge tcpd
