Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install tabix on Ubuntu.

What is tabix

tabix is:

Tabix indexes files where some columns indicate sequence coordinates: name (usually a chromosome), start and stop. The input data file must be position sorted and compressed by bgzip (provided in this package), which has a gzip like interface. After indexing, tabix is able to quickly retrieve data lines by chromosomal coordinates. Fast data retrieval also works over network if an URI is given as a file name.

This package is built from the HTSlib source, and provides the bgzip, htsfile, and tabix tools.

There are three methods to install tabix on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install tabix Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install tabix using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install tabix

Install tabix Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install tabix using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install tabix

Install tabix Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install tabix using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install tabix

How To Uninstall tabix on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the tabix package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove tabix

Uninstall tabix And Its Dependencies

To uninstall tabix and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove tabix

Remove tabix Configurations and Data

To remove tabix configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge tabix

Remove tabix configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove tabix configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge tabix
