Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install sysbench on Ubuntu.

What is sysbench

sysbench is:

SysBench is a modular, scriptable and multi-threaded benchmark tool based on LuaJIT. It is most frequently used for database benchmarks, but can also be used to create arbitrarily complex workloads that do not involve a database server.

The idea of this benchmark suite is to quickly get an impression about system performance without setting up complex database benchmarks or even without installing a database at all.

Current features allow one to test the following system parameters:

Primarily written for MySQL server benchmarking, SysBench will be further extended to support multiple database backends, distributed benchmarks and third-party plug-in modules.

There are three methods to install sysbench on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install sysbench Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install sysbench using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install sysbench

Install sysbench Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install sysbench using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install sysbench

Install sysbench Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install sysbench using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install sysbench

How To Uninstall sysbench on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the sysbench package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove sysbench

Uninstall sysbench And Its Dependencies

To uninstall sysbench and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove sysbench

Remove sysbench Configurations and Data

To remove sysbench configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge sysbench

Remove sysbench configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove sysbench configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge sysbench
