Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install synaptic on Ubuntu.
What is synaptic
synaptic is:
Synaptic is a graphical package management tool based on GTK+ and APT. Synaptic enables you to install, upgrade and remove software packages in a user friendly way.
Besides these basic functions the following features are provided:
- Search and filter the list of available packages
- Perform smart system upgrades
- Fix broken package dependencies
- Edit the list of used repositories (sources.list)
- Download the latest changelog of a package
- Configure packages through the debconf system
- Browse all available documentation related to a package (dwww is required)
There are three methods to install synaptic on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install synaptic Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install synaptic using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install synaptic
Install synaptic Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install synaptic using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install synaptic
Install synaptic Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install synaptic using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install synaptic
How To Uninstall synaptic on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the synaptic package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove synaptic
Uninstall synaptic And Its Dependencies
To uninstall synaptic and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove synaptic
Remove synaptic Configurations and Data
To remove synaptic configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge synaptic
Remove synaptic configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove synaptic configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge synaptic
