Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install stockfish on Ubuntu.
What is stockfish
stockfish is:
free chess engine derived from Glaurung 2.1. It is a chess engine, so it requires an UCI (universal chess interface) compatible GUI like XBoard (with PolyGlot), eboard, Jose, Arena or scid in order to be used comfortably. It is the strongest open source chess engine by october 2009 in the “computer chess rating list” CCRL. Written in C++ it uses multiple threads and cores. It is capable of Chess960 and has experimental support for polyglot opening books.
There are three methods to install stockfish on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install stockfish Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install stockfish using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install stockfish
Install stockfish Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install stockfish using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install stockfish
Install stockfish Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install stockfish using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install stockfish
How To Uninstall stockfish on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the stockfish package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove stockfish
Uninstall stockfish And Its Dependencies
To uninstall stockfish and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove stockfish
Remove stockfish Configurations and Data
To remove stockfish configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge stockfish
Remove stockfish configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove stockfish configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge stockfish
