In this tutorial we learn how to install stilts on Ubuntu.
What is stilts
stilts is:
The STIL Tool Set is a set of command-line tools based on STIL, the Starlink Tables Infrastructure Library. It deals with the processing of tabular data; the package has been designed for, but is not restricted to, astronomical tables such as object catalogues. Some of the tools are generic and can work with multiple formats (including FITS, VOTable, CDF, CSV, SQL and ASCII), and others are specific to the VOTable format. In some ways, STILTS forms the command-line counterpart of the GUI table analysis tool TOPCAT. The package is robust, fully documented, and designed for efficiency, especially with very large datasets.

There are three methods to install stilts on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install stilts Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install stilts using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install stilts
Install stilts Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install stilts using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install stilts
Install stilts Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install stilts using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install stilts
How To Uninstall stilts on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the stilts package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove stilts
Uninstall stilts And Its Dependencies
To uninstall stilts and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove stilts
Remove stilts Configurations and Data
To remove stilts configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge stilts
