stiff is:
STIFF is a program that converts scientific FITS images to the TIFF format for illustration purposes. The main features of STIFF are:
- Accurate reproduction of the original surface brightnesses and colours
- Automatic or manual contrast and brightness adjustments
- Automatic sky background intensity and colour balance
- Adjustable colour saturation
- Colour-friendly gamma correction capabilities
- One or three input channels: gray-scale or true colour output
- Output with 8 or 16 bits per component
- Pixel rebinning and x/y flip options
- Support for arbitrarily large input and output images on standard hardware (BigTIFF support)
- Support for tiled, multiresolution pyramids
- Support for lossless and lossy compression methods
- Multi-threaded code with load-balancing to take advantage of multiple cores and processors.
- XML VOTable-compliant output of meta-data.
There are three methods to install stiff on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install stiff Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install stiff using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install stiff

After updating apt database, We can install stiff using apt by running the following command:

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

How To Uninstall stiff on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the stiff package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove stiff

To uninstall stiff and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove stiff
Remove stiff Configurations and Data
To remove stiff configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge stiff
