In this tutorial we learn how to install squeak-vm on Ubuntu.

What is squeak-vm

squeak-vm is:

Squeak is a full-featured implementation of the Smalltalk programming language and environment based on (and largely compatible with) the original Smalltalk-80 system.

This package contains just the Unix Squeak virtual machine. You will likely need also an image file containing a “snapshot” of a live Squeak session - e.g. one of the Debian packages etoys or scratch.

There are three methods to install squeak-vm on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install squeak-vm Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install squeak-vm using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install squeak-vm

Install squeak-vm Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install squeak-vm using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install squeak-vm

Install squeak-vm Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install squeak-vm using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install squeak-vm

How To Uninstall squeak-vm on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the squeak-vm package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove squeak-vm

Uninstall squeak-vm And Its Dependencies

To uninstall squeak-vm and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove squeak-vm

Remove squeak-vm Configurations and Data

To remove squeak-vm configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge squeak-vm

Remove squeak-vm configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove squeak-vm configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge squeak-vm
