Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install speakup-doc on Ubuntu.

What is `speakup-doc`

speakup-doc is:

Speakup allows you to interact with applications and the GNU/Linux operating system with audible feedback from the console using a synthetic speech device.

Speakup allows you to navigate around the screen using the typical screen review functions such as say word, say line, announce cursor position, which console your currently on, and much, much more. It also allows one to load in configuration parameters for controlling various aspects of the synthesizer you are using, as well as speakup itself.

There are three methods to install speakup-doc on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install speakup-doc Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install speakup-doc using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install speakup-doc

Install speakup-doc Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install speakup-doc using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install speakup-doc

Install speakup-doc Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install speakup-doc using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install speakup-doc

How To Uninstall speakup-doc on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the speakup-doc package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove speakup-doc

Uninstall speakup-doc And Its Dependencies

To uninstall speakup-doc and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove speakup-doc

Remove speakup-doc Configurations and Data

To remove speakup-doc configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge speakup-doc
