In this tutorial we learn how to install sniffit on Ubuntu.
What is sniffit
sniffit is:
Sniffit is a packet sniffer for TCP/UDP/ICMP packets over IPv4. It is able to give you a very detailed technical info on these packets, as SEQ, ACK, TTL, Window, etc. The packet contents also can be viewed, in different formats (hex or plain text, etc.).
Sniffit is based in libpcap and is useful when learning about computer networks and their security.
There are three methods to install sniffit on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install sniffit Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install sniffit using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install sniffit
Install sniffit Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install sniffit using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install sniffit
Install sniffit Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install sniffit using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install sniffit
How To Uninstall sniffit on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the sniffit package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove sniffit
Uninstall sniffit And Its Dependencies
To uninstall sniffit and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove sniffit
Remove sniffit Configurations and Data
To remove sniffit configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge sniffit
