Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install smlnj on Ubuntu.
What is smlnj
smlnj is:
SML/NJ is an implementation of the Standard ML programming language. Standard ML has many features, including type safety, polymorphism, algebraic data types with pattern matching, higher-order functions, and a sophisticated module system. It is especially well-suited for writing compilers and other language processors.
This package includes the interactive compiler (sml), the compilation manager (CM), and some essential libraries. It is a “working” version, but believed to be stable.
Install this package if you want to program in SML.
There are three methods to install smlnj on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install smlnj Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install smlnj using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install smlnj
Install smlnj Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install smlnj using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install smlnj
Install smlnj Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install smlnj using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install smlnj
How To Uninstall smlnj on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the smlnj package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove smlnj
Uninstall smlnj And Its Dependencies
To uninstall smlnj and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove smlnj
Remove smlnj Configurations and Data
To remove smlnj configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge smlnj
Remove smlnj configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove smlnj configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge smlnj
