What is smartmontools
smartmontools is:
The smartmontools package contains two utility programs (smartctl and smartd) to control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.) built into most modern ATA and SCSI hard disks. It is derived from the smartsuite package, and includes support for ATA/ATAPI-5 disks. It should run on any modern Linux system.
There are three methods to install smartmontools on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install smartmontools Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install smartmontools using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install smartmontools

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install smartmontools using apt by running the following command:

Install smartmontools Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install smartmontools using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install smartmontools

To uninstall only the smartmontools package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove smartmontools

To uninstall smartmontools and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove smartmontools
Remove smartmontools Configurations and Data
To remove smartmontools configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge smartmontools
