Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install smartlist on Ubuntu.
What is smartlist
smartlist is:
SmartList is a mailing list manager built on top of the procmail mail processing package. Some features:
- Enough intelligence to overcome the ignorance of some subscribers (will direct subscribe and unsubscribe requests away from the regular list and automatically onto the -request address).
- No hardwired format for (un)subscribe requests (i.e. new subscribers need not be educated, unsubscribing users do not need to remember any particular syntax).
- Intelligent automatic removal of addresses from the list that cause too many bounces.
- Duplicate submissions are eliminated automatically.
- You can set up a mailing list to function as a standalone mail archive server.
There are three methods to install smartlist on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install smartlist Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install smartlist using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install smartlist
Install smartlist Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install smartlist using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install smartlist
Install smartlist Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install smartlist using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install smartlist
How To Uninstall smartlist on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the smartlist package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove smartlist

To uninstall smartlist and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove smartlist
Remove smartlist Configurations and Data
To remove smartlist configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge smartlist
