Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install slirp on Ubuntu.
What is slirp
slirp is:
Slirp is a TCP/IP emulator which turns an ordinary shell account into a (C)SLIP/PPP account. This allows shell users to use all the funky Internet applications like Netscape, Mosaic, CUSeeMe, etc.
Please note that maybe your ISP really doesn’t like you using slirp, because they want to charge more for a ppp connection, so use it at your own risk.
There are three methods to install slirp on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install slirp Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install slirp using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install slirp
Install slirp Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install slirp using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install slirp
Install slirp Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install slirp using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install slirp
How To Uninstall slirp on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the slirp package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove slirp
Uninstall slirp And Its Dependencies
To uninstall slirp and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove slirp
Remove slirp Configurations and Data
To remove slirp configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge slirp
Remove slirp configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove slirp configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge slirp
