Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install slic3r on Ubuntu.
What is slic3r
slic3r is:
Slic3r converts digital 3D models into printing instructions (G-code) for your 3D printer. It cuts the model into horizontal slices (layers), generates toolpaths to fill them and calculates the amount of material to be extruded.
Slic3r supports input in the STL, AMF and OBJ formats, and can output G-code for several series of 3D printers, including RepRap, Ultimaker, Makerbot, as well as SVG files for DLP printers.
It can be used with a graphical interface, or in batch mode via the command-line.
There are three methods to install slic3r on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install slic3r Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install slic3r using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install slic3r
Install slic3r Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install slic3r using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install slic3r
Install slic3r Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install slic3r using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install slic3r
How To Uninstall slic3r on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the slic3r package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove slic3r
Uninstall slic3r And Its Dependencies
To uninstall slic3r and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove slic3r
Remove slic3r Configurations and Data
To remove slic3r configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge slic3r
Remove slic3r configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove slic3r configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge slic3r
