In this tutorial we learn how to install shared-mime-info on Ubuntu.
What is shared-mime-info
shared-mime-info is:
This is the shared MIME-info database from the X Desktop Group. It is required by any program complying to the Shared MIME-Info Database spec, which is also included in this package.
At this time at least ROX, GNOME, KDE and Xfce use this database.
There are three methods to install shared-mime-info on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install shared-mime-info Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install shared-mime-info using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install shared-mime-info

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install shared-mime-info using apt by running the following command:

Install shared-mime-info Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install shared-mime-info using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install shared-mime-info
How To Uninstall shared-mime-info on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the shared-mime-info package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove shared-mime-info
Uninstall shared-mime-info And Its Dependencies
To uninstall shared-mime-info and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove shared-mime-info
Remove shared-mime-info Configurations and Data
To remove shared-mime-info configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge shared-mime-info
