In this tutorial we learn how to install scilab on Ubuntu.
What is scilab
scilab is:
Scilab is a matrix-based scientific software package. Scilab contains hundreds of built-in mathematical functions, rich data structures (including polynomials, rationals, linear systems, lists, etc…) and comes with a number of specific toolboxes for control, signal processing, …
This package also provides Xcos, a graphical editor to design hybrid dynamical systems models. Models can be designed, loaded, saved, compiled and simulated. Stable and efficient solution for industrial and academics needs, Xcos provides functionalities for modeling of mechanical systems (automotive, aeronautics…), hydraulic circuits (dam, pipe modeling…), control systems, etc. Modelica capabilities are also provided.
For a minimum version of scilab, install package “scilab-cli”.
There are three methods to install scilab on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install scilab Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install scilab using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install scilab
Install scilab Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install scilab using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install scilab
Install scilab Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install scilab using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install scilab
How To Uninstall scilab on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the scilab package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove scilab
Uninstall scilab And Its Dependencies
To uninstall scilab and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove scilab
Remove scilab Configurations and Data
To remove scilab configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge scilab
Remove scilab configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove scilab configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge scilab
