Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install s3fs on Ubuntu.
What is s3fs
s3fs is:
s3fs is a FUSE filesystem that allows you to mount an Amazon S3 bucket as a local filesystem. It stores files natively and transparently in S3 (i.e., you can use other programs to access the same files). Maximum file size is 5 TB when using multipart upload.
s3fs is stable and is being used in a number of production environments, e.g., rsync backup to s3.
There are three methods to install s3fs on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install s3fs Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install s3fs using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install s3fs
Install s3fs Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install s3fs using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install s3fs
Install s3fs Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install s3fs using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install s3fs
How To Uninstall s3fs on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the s3fs package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove s3fs
Uninstall s3fs And Its Dependencies
To uninstall s3fs and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove s3fs
Remove s3fs Configurations and Data
To remove s3fs configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge s3fs
Remove s3fs configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove s3fs configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge s3fs
