In this tutorial we learn how to install ruby-levenshtein on Ubuntu.

What is ruby-levenshtein

ruby-levenshtein is:

The Levenshtein distance is a metric for measuring the amount of difference between two sequences (i.e., the so called edit distance). The Levenshtein distance between two sequences is given by the minimum number of operations needed to transform one sequence into the other, where an operation is an insertion, deletion, or substitution of a single element.

This Ruby library can work on strings, arrays or any other objects provided the sequences respond to :each and the objects to :hash and :eql?.

There are three methods to install ruby-levenshtein on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ruby-levenshtein Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install ruby-levenshtein using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install ruby-levenshtein

Install ruby-levenshtein Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install ruby-levenshtein using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install ruby-levenshtein

Install ruby-levenshtein Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ruby-levenshtein using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ruby-levenshtein

How To Uninstall ruby-levenshtein on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the ruby-levenshtein package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ruby-levenshtein

Uninstall ruby-levenshtein And Its Dependencies

To uninstall ruby-levenshtein and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove ruby-levenshtein

Remove ruby-levenshtein Configurations and Data

To remove ruby-levenshtein configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ruby-levenshtein

Remove ruby-levenshtein configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove ruby-levenshtein configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ruby-levenshtein
