Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install riece on Ubuntu.
What is riece
riece is:
Riece is a user interface for IRC (Internet Relay Chat). You should spell it with the first letter capitalized and pronounce it as /ri:s/.
The features of Riece are as follows:
- Several IRC servers may be used at the same time.
- Many features built upon the extension mechanism called add-on. Currently 30 such add-ons are available.
- Installation is easy. Riece doesn’t depend on other packages.
- Setup is easy. Automatically save/restore the configuration.
- Step-by-step instructions are included.
- Mostly compliant with the latest IRC client protocol (RFC 2812).
There are three methods to install riece on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install riece Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install riece using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install riece
Install riece Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install riece using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install riece
Install riece Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install riece using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install riece
How To Uninstall riece on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the riece package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove riece

To uninstall riece and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove riece
Remove riece Configurations and Data
To remove riece configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge riece
