Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install relion on Ubuntu.
What is relion
relion is:
RELION (for REgularised LIkelihood OptimisatioN) is a stand-alone computer program for Maximum A Posteriori refinement of (multiple) 3D reconstructions or 2D class averages in cryo-electron microscopy.
RELION provides a GUI, several command-line tools in parallel (MPI) and serial versions, optionally with CUDA/GPU support.
relion provides the serial and parallel (MPI) command-line tools without CUDA/GPU support.
There are three methods to install relion on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install relion Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install relion using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install relion
Install relion Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install relion using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install relion
Install relion Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install relion using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install relion
How To Uninstall relion on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the relion package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove relion
Uninstall relion And Its Dependencies
To uninstall relion and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove relion
Remove relion Configurations and Data
To remove relion configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge relion
Remove relion configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge relion
