Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install ratmenu on Ubuntu.

What is ratmenu

ratmenu is:

This is ratmenu, a simple program that allows you to create X menus from the shell. Although designed for ratpoison, it will work with any ICCCM compliant window manager.

It was forked from 9menu version 1.5, to provide specific support for the ratpoison window manager. Where 9menu only responds to the mouse, and ignores the keyboard, ratmenu has all mouse sensitivity taken out, and only responds to the keyboard. Since then it has evolved nifty features and behaviors of its own. The source code was also cleaned up and old cruft weeded out.

There are three methods to install ratmenu on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install ratmenu Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install ratmenu using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install ratmenu

Install ratmenu Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install ratmenu using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install ratmenu

Install ratmenu Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install ratmenu using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install ratmenu

How To Uninstall ratmenu on Ubuntu

To uninstall only the ratmenu package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove ratmenu

Uninstall ratmenu And Its Dependencies

To uninstall ratmenu and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove ratmenu

Remove ratmenu Configurations and Data

To remove ratmenu configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge ratmenu

Remove ratmenu configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove ratmenu configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ratmenu
