Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install ranger on Ubuntu.
What is ranger
ranger is:
Ranger is a console file manager with VI key bindings. It provides a minimalistic and nice curses interface with a view on the directory hierarchy. It ships with “rifle”, a file launcher that is good at automatically finding out which program to use for what file type.
Design Goals
- An easily maintainable file manager in a high level language
- A quick way to switch directories and browse the file system
- Keep it small but useful, do one thing and do it well
- Console based, with smooth integration into the unix shell
There are three methods to install ranger on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ranger Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ranger using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ranger
Install ranger Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ranger using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ranger
Install ranger Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ranger using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ranger
How To Uninstall ranger on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the ranger package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ranger
Uninstall ranger And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ranger and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ranger
Remove ranger Configurations and Data
To remove ranger configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ranger
Remove ranger configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ranger configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ranger
