In this tutorial we learn how to install ragel on Ubuntu.
What is ragel
ragel is:
Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C, C++, Objective-C, D, Ruby or Java code. Ragel allows the programmer to embed actions at any point in a regular language. Non-determinism can be controlled through the use of embedded priorities and guarded regular language operators. Ragel also supports the construction of scanners and the building of state machines using state-charts. Ragel can be used to create robust recognizers and parsers which run very fast. It can work with integer-sized alphabets and can compile large state machines. The generated code has no dependencies.
There are three methods to install ragel on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install ragel Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install ragel using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install ragel
Install ragel Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install ragel using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install ragel
Install ragel Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install ragel using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install ragel
How To Uninstall ragel on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the ragel package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove ragel
Uninstall ragel And Its Dependencies
To uninstall ragel and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove ragel
Remove ragel Configurations and Data
To remove ragel configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge ragel
Remove ragel configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove ragel configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge ragel
