Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install radvd on Ubuntu.
What is radvd
radvd is:
IPv6 has a lot more support for autoconfiguration than IPv4. But for this autoconfiguration to work on the hosts of a network, the routers of the local network have to run a program which answers the autoconfiguration requests of the hosts.
On Linux this program is called radvd, which stands for Router ADVertisement Daemon. This daemon listens to router solicitations (RS) and answers with router advertisement (RA). Furthermore unsolicited RAs are also sent from time to time.
There are three methods to install radvd on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install radvd Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install radvd using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install radvd
Install radvd Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install radvd using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install radvd
Install radvd Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install radvd using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install radvd
How To Uninstall radvd on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the radvd package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove radvd
Uninstall radvd And Its Dependencies
To uninstall radvd and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove radvd
Remove radvd Configurations and Data
To remove radvd configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge radvd
Remove radvd configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove radvd configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge radvd
