Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install qgis on Ubuntu.
What is qgis
qgis is:
A Geographic Information System (GIS) manages, analyzes, and displays databases of geographic information. QGIS supports shape file viewing and editing, spatial data storage with PostgreSQL/PostGIS, projection on-the-fly, map composition, and a number of other features via a plugin interface. QGIS also supports display of various georeferenced raster and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) formats including GeoTIFF, Arc/Info ASCII Grid, and USGS ASCII DEM.
There are three methods to install qgis on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install qgis Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install qgis using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install qgis
Install qgis Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install qgis using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install qgis
Install qgis Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install qgis using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install qgis
How To Uninstall qgis on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the qgis package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove qgis
Uninstall qgis And Its Dependencies
To uninstall qgis and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove qgis
Remove qgis Configurations and Data
To remove qgis configuration and data from Ubuntu we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge qgis
Remove qgis configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove qgis configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge qgis
