In this tutorial we learn how to install qemu-system-mips on Ubuntu.
What is qemu-system-mips
qemu-system-mips is:
QEMU is a fast processor emulator: currently the package supports MIPS emulation. By using dynamic translation it achieves reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs.
This package provides the full system emulation binaries to emulate the following mips hardware: mips mipsel mips64 mips64el.
In system emulation mode QEMU emulates a full system, including a processor and various peripherals. It enables easier testing and debugging of system code. It can also be used to provide virtual hosting of several virtual machines on a single server.
There are three methods to install qemu-system-mips on Ubuntu. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install qemu-system-mips Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install qemu-system-mips using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install qemu-system-mips

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install qemu-system-mips using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install qemu-system-mips
Install qemu-system-mips Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install qemu-system-mips using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install qemu-system-mips
How To Uninstall qemu-system-mips on Ubuntu
To uninstall only the qemu-system-mips package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove qemu-system-mips
